How it works
Why you don't need a GP referral
NHS ADHD services require a GP referral because they are part of the NHS pathway. Private assessments operate independently — you are a self-funding patient choosing your own clinician.
A GP referral is a mechanism for directing patients through NHS pathways — it is not a clinical requirement for ADHD assessment itself. Private clinicians are registered specialists in their own right and do not need GP authorisation to assess and diagnose.
NeuroAxis clinicians are NMC-registered specialist nurse prescribers. They assess, diagnose and manage ADHD independently. Your GP is not part of this process unless you choose to involve them afterwards — for example, to request a shared care agreement for medication.

Faster access
No waiting for a GP appointment before booking. Self-refer today, assessment within days.
🔒
More privacy
ADHD concerns don't go on your GP record before diagnosis if you prefer it that way.
🚫
No gatekeeping
If your GP has previously been dismissive, self-referral bypasses that entirely.

Common questions
Self-referral FAQs
Yes — completely. Private ADHD assessments in the UK do not require GP involvement at any stage before the assessment. NeuroAxis accepts self-referrals directly. You book, complete the pre-assessment forms, attend your appointment and receive your report — all without a GP referral.
Common reasons include: a GP who has been dismissive of ADHD concerns; previous failed attempts to get a referral; wanting faster access than waiting for GP involvement; privacy — not wanting ADHD on a GP record before diagnosis; or simply finding it easier to go direct. All are valid.
Completely. A diagnosis from a registered UK clinician following NICE NG87 guidelines is clinically valid regardless of how you accessed the assessment. It is accepted by GPs, employers, schools, universities, the DWP and the DVLA.
You are not legally required to. However, if you want to access ADHD medication via NHS prescription rates, you will need to share your report with your GP to request a shared care agreement. We recommend doing this — the report is specifically written to make this process as straightforward as possible.
A GP refusal to refer does not affect your ability to self-refer privately. And once you have a NICE-compliant diagnosis in writing from a registered clinician, your GP is in a very different position — they cannot refuse to acknowledge the diagnosis, and most will reconsider their position on shared care once presented with the clinical evidence.
Yes. Parents and carers can self-refer children aged 6–17 directly to NeuroAxis without a GP referral. As with adult assessments, the report is accepted by schools for EHCP applications and by GPs for medication if appropriate.
No GP. No referral. No waiting.
